Carmel is one of the first recipients of the prestigious Jim Bacon Foundation Scholarship awarded to Honours or postgraduate students in fine arts. "I originally started my tertiary studies in another degree, but going to art school was something that had always been in the back of my mind. When the school of visual and performing arts moved to new facilities at Inveresk, I thought the opportunity to study at such a great place in my home city was too good to overlook, so I bit the bullet! The highlight of my study would be graduating with first class honours. It was not something I would ever have expected, and for me, is a real indicator of how much the degree challenged me to work hard at improving my arts practice.
