The Photomedia studio at the School of Visual and Performing Arts encourages creative expression through inciting critical reflective engagement with ‘imaging’ technologies, and their application across our wide and varied twenty-first century image culture. Students are challenged to re-define their perception and use of ‘imaging’ technologies as a vehicle for creative expression and innovation in visual art.

The courses offered foster an awareness of the history and use of imaging technologies in a global environment, while recognizing the value of the local, in the gathering and collection of images, and their subsequent manipulation and use to convey meaning. As a platform for convergence, digital technology is unique in its capacity to combine a range of mediums and approaches to imaging the world. Emphasis is placed on the conceptual development of studio-based projects and a meaningful engagement and interaction with the environment we inhabit.

The studios’ philosophy recognizes the value, power and resonance of images, in response to an ever-increasing engagement with new and emerging forms of visual communication. Introductory and Advanced units are offered in Analogue Black and white Photography, Digital Imaging, Digital Video, Multimedia and Web Design, in addition to the project-based studio explorations associated with the Bachelor of Contemporary Arts Degree and postgraduate programs. The School of Visual and Performing Arts houses a spacious, well equipped Analogue Darkroom and State of the Art Digital Imaging Facilities.

  • FFR110 Introduction to Photomedia
  • FFE102 Introduction to Two-Dimensional Studies
