The School of Visual & Performing Arts offers you the opportunity to develop your unique creative intelligence in a dynamic arts environment. In our progressive undergraduate degree, the Bachelor of Contemporary Arts, you will receive a comprehensive education in fundamental technical and conceptual skills. This is set within an innovative course structure that will allow you to develop the flexibility to adapt to a fast-changing professional arts environment.
The School currently has over 350 full-time and part-time students, including interstate and international students. Teaching and research in our School is conducted by over 30 full-time and sessional staff.
The visual arts units include: Ceramics & Glass, Drawing, Painting, Photomedia, Sculpture, Textiles and Theory.
Our Theatre program covers: Performance, Production, Technical Theatre, Theory and electives such as stage design and scriptwriting.
Although the School offers a great diversity of subjects, we are a personal size and are therefore able to provide a supportive, caring and focused environment for our students. We maintain ongoing professional links with arts practitioners and the Tasmanian community through the School's Arts Forum, conference, exhibition, music and theatre activities.
The Academy of the Arts has formed a strategic partnership with the Queen Victoria Museum & Art Gallery and the Tasmanian Polytechnic in order to develop significant cultural projects in pure and applied research areas. Our focus isn't just at a local level, however, as our visiting scholar and artist-in-residence programs bring arts professionals of national and international stature into the School.
The Academy of the Arts is much more than a University campus. It is a vibrant, creative community of artists, actors, musicians, cultural collectors and conservation managers, working as teachers, undertaking research projects, preparing exhibitions and performances, and collaborating to reveal new insights into contemporary arts practices.
